World champion Button tips karter Callum for stardom

Peterborough karting ace Callum Bowyer has taken another step towards motor racing stardom after being given the seal of approval by Formula One's latest world champion.

Peterborough karting ace Callum Bowyer has taken another step towards motor racing stardom after being given the seal of approval by Formula One's latest world champion.Callum received praise from 2009 F1 World Champion Jenson Button, when the 15-year-old Gunthorpe hot shot picked up a trophy for his success in last year's Formula Kart Stars.

It is not the first time the young racer has attracted the attention of the biggest names in racing - in 2008 the then world champion Lewis Hamilton presented him with championship trophies and even voted for him in The Evening Telegraph's Young Sports Personality of the Year.

Now Callum is hoping to follow in the two British stars tyre tracks by claiming the Formula One title.

He said: "Jenson was really down to earth and a really nice guy, a lot like Lewis.

"He gave me tips about how to improve this year and continue with my success.

"He congratulated me on my results so far, and we also talked about how well he had done. He was very positive about what I had achieved, as well as what he is going to do this season."

While Jenson is preparing for a new start in the coming season having moved from Brawn GP to join Lewis Hamilton at McLaren, Callum is preparing for one of the biggest seasons of his career so far.

Along with racing in the senior KF2 series alongside professional karters and adults, he will also have to find time to fit in his GCSE coursework.

The Ken Stimpson pupil said: "I sat down with my team and my family last year, and after the success we had we decided it was the best decision to move to the KF2 series.

"The youngest you can enter the series is aged 15, so I will be one of the youngest on the grid. It is intimidating racing against people with years more experience, but pre-season testing is going really well, and we have been setting some good times. I am aiming for a top five position in the British championship, and there is no reason why we cannot achieve that.

"Jenson also told me to make sure I work hard at school, and I don't go karting if I have not caught up with my work. It is tough to find the right mix, but I'm sure I will be OK."

Callum is currently looking for sponsorship for the coming season and anyone interested should call Tracey Bowyer on 01733 701099.
