Woodston school's ethos an Ofsted hit

STAFF and pupils at Woodston Primary School are celebrating after winning praise from inspectors in the school's latest Ofsted report.

STAFF and pupils at Woodston Primary School are celebrating after winning praise from inspectors in the school's latest Ofsted report. The school, at Celta Road, received an overall "good" grade - the second highest - following an inspection in December.

The school also scored the top "outstanding" grade in seven categories, including those concerning the well-being of pupils.

Headteacher Jacki Mitchell said she was delighted and her staff are ecstatic about the report.

She said: "We know we do a good job with our children but when you have Ofsted validate the fact it makes it all that much more worthwhile.

"When it comes to the 'outstandings' we received, it is fantastic to see how they recognised the ethos and relationship we have with our students and how we celebrate their work."

The school's "outstanding" grades came in categories including the effectiveness of guidance and support, students' behaviour and the feeling of safety and security they have while they work.

The report said: "It is highly regarded in the community for the warm welcome it provides for everyone, no matter what their background."

The school also received an "outstanding" for its teaching of students with special needs, who the report said make "exceptional progress".

Woodston Primary's continued improvement in attainment was also praised.

The glowing report was especially welcomed by staff as the inspection was something of a surprise - taking place in the last few days before the Christmas holiday.

But fortunately, the ever-prepared teachers had already lined up a series of festive-themed activities for pupils.

Mrs Mitchell added: "We did things like making Christmas websites, doing instruction packs for Christmas hats for literacy and doing numeracy tasks based around the 12 Days of Christmas."

The report did highlight some of the ways in which the school could improve, with inspectors asking the school to continue its progress in raising standards in English.

Inspectors also asked the school to encourage its recently appointed members of the governing body to get more involved in school business.

Headteacher Mrs Mitchell said this was something which was already being addressed.
