Whittlesey: Cash box taken from security guard at supermarket

A SECURITY guard was robbed as he transported cash from a Whittlesey supermarket at 3.40pm on Saturday (16 January).

A SECURITY guard was robbed as he transported cash from a Whittlesey supermarket at 3.40pm on Saturday (16 January).The security worker was leaving the Somerfield store, in Blunts Lane, with a cash box,

As he carried the box back to his secure van, he was set upon by a group of males.

The security guard was allegedly pushed from behind and fell over, dropping the cash box.

As he recovered, the suspects made off with the box and its contents.

Cambridgeshire police were alerted to the incident and officers launched an extensive search of the town, where crowds had flocked to see the annual Straw Bear festivities which was in full swing.

The police helicopter and dog unit were also called in to search and two suspects were apprehended.

A spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire police said it was not yet known exactly how much cash was in the box. She said: "The cash has not been recovered. It was a large sum."

She added that officers are currently still looking for a suspect in connection with the incident.

Two 17-year-old males, both from London, have been arrested and charged with robbery in connection with the incident. They appeared at Peterborough Magistrates' Court on Monday.
