Westwood and Ravensthorpe: New café is just our cup of tea

SOMETHING'S been brewing at the Westwood and Ravensthorpe Children's Centre - and it turns out it was tea.

SOMETHING'S been brewing at the Westwood and Ravensthorpe Children's Centre - and it turns out it was tea. After months of careful planning, the centre's new community cafe was finally opened two weeks ago, and local residents have been pouring in to try out the menu.

The caf is open from noon to 2pm every Tuesday, at Westwood and Ravensthorpe Children's Centre, which is next to Highlees Primary School, in Ashton Road, Westwood.

The menu includes hot and cold drinks, snacks on toast, pizza, sandwiches and jacket potatoes to provide a hot lunch at budget prices, with no item on the menu costing more than 50p.

The centre's health and social care operation manager, Linda Minett, said helpers had been amazed with the response.

She said: "We had 25 people through the doors on the opening day, and then 36 people last week.

"Considering the weather has been bad, to get that many people has been amazing."

The caf is open to all members of the community -, not just parents and carers with children - and organisers are hoping other residents will come along and enjoy the facilities.

Mrs Minett added: "We want to get everyone involved in the community, particularly the elderly, and that's why we have looked to keep costs low, so please come and visit us. We have already had a lot of volunteers who have jumped at the chance of getting involved but we are always looking for more.

"We are looking for people of all ages and experience, so if you fancy helping out, contact staff at the number given below."

And the community is also being asked to make one more vital contribution to the caf - suggest a name for it.

Mrs Minett added: "We shall be putting a suggestion box into the caf for people to put in ideas."

The children's centre is managed by Family Care, in partnership with Peterborough City Council.

Anyone would like to know more about visiting the caf or is interested in volunteering to help, they should call Louise Brawn, Bobbie Day or Linda Minett on 01733 260833.
