Werrington Carnival's future under threat

THE future of the popular Werrington Carnival is under threat following the retirement of some of its key committee members.

THE future of the popular Werrington Carnival is under threat following the retirement of some of its key committee members. Many of these community stalwarts have given years of service to organise the event, but have decided to call it a day while on a high after last year's successful Werrington Scout and Guide Carnival.

Now organisers are making a desperate plea for volunteers to help with some of the main committee jobs to ensure that it still goes ahead on June 26.

And at stake is 40 years of parade history as the committee celebrated the event's Ruby anniversary last year - not bad for an event which started as little more than a fete in a small field.

Organiser Julie Cox said: "The problem we have is that some of our long-serving members have retired.

"If we don't fill these positions, it will seriously jeopardise this year's carnival."

The positions that need filling are for a judges and trophies co-ordinator for the fancy dress entrants and floats.

The committee also needs a parade marshall to co-ordinate the parade smoothly and safely, which will involve liaising with the police and Peterborough City Council.

There is also a publicity role available which involves contacting the press and radio as well as organising the production and distribution of posters.

Last summer, thousands of villagers joined in the day of fun and the route through the village was packed with families viewing the parade which featured scores of floats.

The committee raised 7,000, for the upkeep of the Scout HQ, as well as thousands more for the charity stalls which took part in the event.

Anyone who can help with any of the vacancies or would like to be a part of the community event should call Julie Cox on 01733 759219.
