Video: ‘Tragic accident’: Bodies of woman and boy found in pond in Holywell

Friday, 6.35pm: Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman and a boy were found drowned in a duck pond in Holywell, near Castle Bytham, police believe it was “a tragic accident”.

The bodies of the woman and boy, who Lincolnshire Police have said is from Leicestershire, were recovered by Lincolnshire Police Underwater Search Unit officers from a pond at Holywell village earlier today.

Their names are not expected to be confirmed until Monday.

The bodies were found after they received a call from a woman at about 9.20pm yesterday, expressing concern for the welfare of her six-year-old son and her 71-year-old mother.

When police attended the elderly woman’s address in Castle Bytham no-one was there and a search, which included a RAF search and rescue helicopter, began to find them.

Officers found her car at about 10.45pm close to a duck pond at Holywell village and soon afterwards the body of a woman, thought to be in her seventies, was recovered from the pond.

Despite efforts to resuscitate the woman she was certified as dead at the scene.

The search continued into the night for the little boy and a body of a child was found just before 4am.

Det Chief Insp David Wood: “At the moment we believe this is a tragic accident.

“Initial inquiries show there were no witnesses so it’s not possible to say how this has occurred.

“There is no information indicating this is suspicious and we are continuing the investigation today.”

A police spokesman said: “The circumstances surrounding the deaths are being investigated and post mortems will be carried out in due course.

“Formal identifications will not be concluded until Monday.

“While most of the immediate families of those involved are aware of the situation we are also in the process of tracing and informing other family members and friends.”

Police are appealing for any witnesses who were travelling between Castle Bytham and Holywell on Thursday evening, he Lincolnshire Police non emergency number is 101.
