Video: Police in walkabout to reassure Gunthorpe residents

DETECTIVES investigating a spate of burglaries in Gunthorpe have been offering crime prevention advice to concerned residents.

DETECTIVES investigating a spate of burglaries in Gunthorpe have been offering crime prevention advice to concerned residents.Since January 11, police in Peterborough have had reports of a number of overnight burglaries in the Gunthorpe area.

In a bid to offer reassurance, officers spent the day in Gunthorpe yesterday, talking to residents and offering crime prevention advice.

Sergeant Alan Bradshaw knocked on doors in a bid to update residents on action being taken to tackle crime, while Carol Aston, from the community safety team, was on hand around the Gunthorpe Ridings and Paston areas to offer specialist crime prevention advice.

She also issued SmartWater kits which allow people to mark their valuable items.

Sgt Bradshaw said: "Myself and officers have spent the day speaking to residents in the Gunthorpe area following the recent burglaries. We have been informing residents of whether any offenders have been arrested and what we are doing to prevent further burglaries.

"We have also been issuing SmartWater to those residents who are not already in receipt of it so they can hopefully try and protect their properties.

"We are working hard to catch the people responsible for this type of crime through Operation Alert but there are also various ways of preventing it happening."

Residents are advised to ensure their windows and doors are locked and all keys are kept out of sight.

Money, jewellery and other goods should not be left on show in homes or cars, and timer switches can be used to turn on lights and radios when people are away from their homes.
