Video: Green Awards 2010 a huge success
LAST night some of Peterborough’s most environmentally friendly people and organisations came together for the first ever Evening Telegraph Green Awards.
In a world of waste, with an all-consuming ‘throw-away’ attitude, it is refreshing to know there are some shining examples in Peterborough of people who care for the environment and aim to give something back.
The awards ceremony was held at the Marriott Hotel and aimed to recognise the hard work and dedication of some of the city’s eco-warriors.
There were nine awards in total – Green Family, Best Kept Allotment, Green Volunteer, Sustainable Food Provider, Green Builder, Green Youth Group, Environmental Photographer, Most Innovative Environmental Project and the Queensgate Award for contribution to the Environmental Capital – and hundreds of people were nominated.
The main categories were judged by Hugh Cripps, chief executive of Peterborough Environmental City Trust (PECT), who was delighted to see that the awards received such a fantastic response from local people.
“The Green Awards are great for Peterborough recognising all the effort of communities, organisations, and individuals to create a cleaner, greener, healthier city,” he said.
“Peterborough’s aspiration to become the UK’s Environment Capital can only be achieved if
we all do our bit – from reducing our environmental impact at home and making our gardens wildlife friendly, to setting up innovative environmental projects and businesses in the city.
“This evening has been truly inspiring – a real insight into how Peterborough is leading the way when it comes to the environment.” The ET’s awards organiser, Claire Tod, hosted the evening and agreed with Mr Cripps saying: “These awards were created to reflect the city’s green agenda and the response, in terms of nominations and the success of the event last night, clearly shows that our city is embracing eco-friendly principles.
“We have been able to highlight and celebrate the hard work put in by the companies and individuals of Peterborough to preserve our planet for future generations.”
The winner of each category was presented with a certificate and a tree sapling.
