Team splash their way to victory

FORMER Walton schoolboy Carl Boyden has made a splash in the watery world of kayaking.Craftsman Carl Boyden was a member of the army's winning white water kayak team at this year's inter-service championships on the River Nith, north of Dumfries, Scotland.

With top canoeists from all three services battling the swollen waters of the river, they found times significantly reduced by the fast flow following recent heavy rains and snow in the region.

The competition, which dates back 40 years, is normally dominated by the Royal Air Force but this year the army lifted the trophy with a clear 10 point win.

Mr Boyden (21) said: "It's great that we won this year especially as there are some of our key paddlers away on operational duty.

"I started canoeing when I was 11 on Rutland Water, I liked it as a sport and when I joined up I found the army encourages sport and support us in a lot of ways.

"We get time to train and compete, help with transport, accommodation costs and equipment such as race boats, it would be quite expensive otherwise.

In addition to being in the winning team, Mr Boyden was placed second in the Men's Canadian event.
