Sunshine’s a ray of hope for Big Brother house

A WOMAN from Peterborough is hoping to bring a ray of sunshine into the Big Brother house.

Yvette Martyn, known as Sunshine, was plucked from a holding pen of TV reality hopefuls to go into the infamous house in front of millions of viewers live on Channel 4 on Wednesday night.

The 24-year-old former King’s School pupil had faced a nail-biting wait before show host Davina McCall announced her name as the 12th house mate in the 11th and final series of Big Brother.

Peterborough is in good form for producing reality TV talent with Aston Merrygold, of JLS fame, and Nicole Lawrence making a name for themselves on the X Factor.

Now Sunshine, a fourth year medical student at Leicester University, is hoping her beauty and brains will prove to be a winning combination as she potentially faces 13 weeks being in the gaze of cameras for 24 hours a day.

And her very own “Big” brother Gwyn Martyn, who lives near Stibbington, said her appearance had taken the family by surprise.

He said: “Yvette had to keep it secret, as they are really strict on security, so we didn’t know she was going in.

“It was weird seeing her on TV and also when they showed her video clips as I had filmed it and my kitten was on it as well.”

In her blog, the single student claims her ambition is to be the Prime Minister, despite a lack of political knowledge, and claims she has had three near death experiences including being bitten by a poisonous spider, taking an accidental overdose of antimalarial drugs and being mugged at knife point.

But she also has a more serious and caring side, having worked for the Samaritans and deciding to become a paediatric doctor,

Gwyn has watched Big Brother in the past and said he had no idea what her “game plan” would be, but he hopes she will keep under the radar and fit in.

Despite the circus theme to the show her brother says she is no clown.

He said: “She is a really intelligent person. She has always been outspoken and is confident to speak her mind so I think it will depend on the other people, they all seem to be big characters so it will be interesting to see how they get on.”

The 26-year-old stockbroker said he thinks the biggest challenge she faces is that she is a strict vegan.

He added: “They often have small budgets for food and people don’t often like making separate dishes for vegetarians. But she is happy eating pasta, so hopefully she will be okay.

”At the end of the day it is down to the public and you never know how she is going to be edited but we know the real Yvette.”

Yvette went to Elton Primary School, King’s Cliffe Middle School, Prince William School in Oundle before finishing her sixth form studies at King’s School.

Headteacher of King’s School Gary Longman revealed he had met Yvette at a dinner for former pupils three years ago and described her as “very able”.

He said: “She achieved very highly when she was here and was well thought of.

“I would describe her as caring, lively and charismatic and I am sure people will be following her with interest.”

When asked how the former pupil would get on Mr Longman added: “We shall have to wait and see – it is always a lottery with the British public.”

FACTFILE... on Big Brother

ABOUT 38 million viewers have watched Big Brother at least once, which equates to 69 per cent of the population.

Over the past nine years 144 housemates have walked through the doors of Big Brother – 66 males and 78 females.

Around 382 cameras have been used to keep an eye on the housemates over the past nine years as well as over 340 microphones and 18,000 radio mic batteries.

To keep it all up and
running more than 640km of cable is used in the set up .

Put it this way - if Ernie Wise was still alive and living in Thorpe Road would he be singing to Eric 'Bring me sunshine'.? I don't think so.

what beauty and brains is the article referring to. She is a gorky looking bimbo. God help us if she practices in peterborough when she qualifies.

Hopefully it will keep the Wansford buffoon occupied for a while. He will probablyl, on the other hand, be writing to the ET whingeing that the house in which his daughter is staying is too cold, somebody is snoring too loud or there is a gipsy site half a mile away.
