Sawtry: Choir in good voice for Haiti

The Sawtry Vocal Academy choir proved they were a real "glass act" after entertaining drinkers to raise money for charity.

The Sawtry Vocal Academy choir proved they were a real "glass act" after entertaining drinkers to raise money for charity.Members of the Sawtry Vocal Academy visited the Moorhen pub in Hampton on February 18 as part of their fundraising efforts to help the Haiti Earthquake Appeal.

And with the event taking place so soon after Valentine's Day, the group of crooners were soon singing serenades to lucky punters in the pub keen to impress their partner - or make up for forgotten presents or cards.

They raised 65 and the idea was the brainchild of group member Jim Grant. He said: "The whole event was a real success.

"We came to serenade people's loved ones as a late Valentine's treat, and people really got into the spirit of the night.

"We charged 5 per song and had sang 13 by the end of the night. It was very tiring but good fun.

"It was something a bit different and it is good to get music like this out to the masses."

The group sang a variety of songs, from classics by Frank Sinatra to tunes from popular musicals and films.

They even gave one man celebrating his birthday a version of Happy Birthday.

Mr Grant said: "We had a few odd requests on the night.

"One man who caught the eye of a lady in the corner bought her a song, which was a little odd.

"But the night was a real success, and we are pleased with how it went."

The group are always looking for new members and meet every Wednesday between 8pm and 10pm at Sawtry Junior School, in Middlefield Road, Sawtry.

Mr Grant said they were particularly looking for younger members to join the group.
