Protest over lap-dancing
A CITY priest has called on religious leaders to join a campaign to reverse a decision to allow a club near his church to run lap-dancing nights.
Father David Jennings, of St Peter and All Souls Roman Catholic Church, has written to religious leaders of all faiths in the city asking them to support his campaign over Pulse 8 nightclub, in Geneva Street, which began holding pole dancingnights last Friday.
In the letter Father David said: “We have been shocked that no attempt was made by the authorities to consult the residents of Geneva Street, nor the Catholic Church which residents next door but one to the night club.
“This inappropriate decision fails to take into account the views of the 1,800 who attend mass each week.
“As faith leaders within the city, I know you would not appreciate such an establishment being sited next door to your place of worship.”
He urged leaders to write to Peterborough City Council’s licensing office.

Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 08:28 PMWith respect to Father Jennings, I have to say that this ongoing campaign is quite preposterous. Angels has been running for years just a stonesthrow from Peterborough Cathedral...so should that be shut? There is a Private Shop just down the road....should that be shut? There are newsagents all around selling The Sun and lads mags full of topless women...so should all newsagents be shut? If this is about morals, then does Fr Jennings refuse marry couples who have had sex before marriage...or refuse entry to services if any men in his flock have ever seen a topless picture in a newspaper or girly magazine? I very much doubt it. Is Fr Jennings going to leave the Catholic Church in disgust at the never-ending stories of appalling abuse by his fellow clergy? I doubt it. Part of the problem in this country is that people are too hung up about nakedness and sex. This might be a shock to some, but getting undressed and having sex is how we were made! This club is not in a quiet residential area surrounded by playgrounds; it's a late-night activity in nightclubland where every weekend for centuries girls have tottered around in a state of semi-undress trying to attract blokes. So what's the difference? I would much prefer to hear about a few lads getting their kicks by visiting a legitimate tax-paying lapdancing club rather than them engaging in illicit, dangerous and potentially abusive activity on Burghley Road.

Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 03:03 AMThe best thing the Catholic church can do for the next 10 years is to stop preaching about sex - they need to get their own house in order first. For too long the church has been more interested in what happens in the bedroom then any other area of a person's life. Priests have consistently condemned homosexuality, whilst most of them are gay themselves. Silence would be the best way forward.

Friday, March 26, 2010 at 07:57 PMYou will have to pay them a pastoral visit Father, Like Cardinal Danielou of France whoe died unexepectedly iin 1974. in the home of a prostitute.. He died on the stairs of a brothel that he was visiting. Allegedly it turned out he was bringing her money to pay for the bail of her lover. At least you will have an excuse.

Friday, March 26, 2010 at 07:49 PMFr Jennings complains again - what a surprise! Anyhow isn't this an immigrants nightclub - most of them are catholics and so will be able to pop next door for confession afteeaards. Bound to be good for business for you Father!

Friday, March 26, 2010 at 07:21 PMsorry to go against the grain guys, but though I am not bothered that it is next to a church, the continuing rise of low quality entertainment bugs me - isn't Angels enough for this size of city How about some quality entertainment for us older people with m oney to burn and nowhere to spend it!

Friday, March 26, 2010 at 05:19 PMPot, kettle and black spring to mind here. People who want to go to lap dancing clubs do so by personal choice and they are not hurting anybody else in doing so. Roman Catholic Priests who abuse little boys do not afford them the same choice. What hope is there when the Pope who was, incidentally, a member of the Hitler Youth, turns a blind eye to that sort of thing.

Friday, March 26, 2010 at 05:09 PMConsidering the current climate in the Catholic Church perhaps Father Ted would rather they had kiddie fiddling nights instead? http:www.timesonline.co.uktolcommentfaitharticle7065824.ece Check out the correspondents name on this report!! Hey Ho …. Only 30 seconds away from this post being deleted …… at least I have said my point though.

Friday, March 26, 2010 at 04:00 PMTraveller - it's freedom of choice to either enjoy lapdancing or not - we have that choice - that's the British way - and the way it should be!

Friday, March 26, 2010 at 02:31 PMI was wondering what was meant by "the advancement of women in society" and I now know - lap dancing! Or can we place this under the umbrella of the "British way of life"!

Friday, March 26, 2010 at 02:22 PMThank you Father David Jennings for bringing this to my attention. I will be sure to pay several visits to Pulse 8 to make sure everything meets my exacting standards. Will Pulse 8 be holding lap dancing at the same time or day as any church events? I can understand there being concerns for your congregation if there is a timetable clash between the dancing and any worshipping, I too would have difficulty in choosing.

Friday, March 26, 2010 at 01:37 PMI'm outraged that the church keeps sticking its nose into other people's business. Are they going to be lap dancing inside the church? Are they going to be forcing the congregation to attend the club? Will the club even be open while the services are in progress? I doubt it. Im sure the lap dancers don't try and stop people going to church do they? So mind your own business and stop forcing your views down people's throats!

Friday, March 26, 2010 at 01:14 PMAs mentioned on a similar thread, the Catholic Church needs to get its own house in order before worrying about the morale’s of others
