Pride file: Staff get on their bikes – in store

IF you're going to raise funds for a charity which promotes cycling among young people and families, there is only one way to do it – get on your bike. But if you work at a supermarket and you're hoping to raise funds through your customers' donations, you can't exactly set off on an epic bike ride.

So what do you do?

Well, one group of workers at Asda in Rivergate, Peterborough, decided if they couldn't get out on a cycle ride, they'd bring one to the store.

So more than 100 members of staff and management popped on their trainers recently to take it in turns on two exercise bikes at the front of the store, for a 24-hour bike marathon starting at 6am.

The group was hoping to raise money for the charity Pedal Power, and encouraged shoppers to donate money as they passed.

And their efforts paid off, as the gang raised an impressive 1,430 on the day.

Events co-ordinator Scott Creedon, one of the organisers, said: "We got a really good response – some customers were even putting notes in the donation buckets, which is great considering the poor economic climate.

"It was a really good day and, with the whole store taking part, there was a real buzz.Thank you to everyone who supported us."

The supermarket was also set to hold a raffle to raise even more cash.
