A GROUP of dedicated Thomas Deacon Academy pupils will make a trip to Mount Everest, one of the natural wonders of the world this summer – and help needy children along the way.Sixth-formers at Thomas Deacon Academy, in Queens Drive, city centre, will travel to Nepal in July to trek to base camp on Mount Everest.

The group of 18 youngsters, who are looking to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Award, will have to climb more than 5,000m to reach the camp later this month, coming face to face with a variety of wildlife, from elephants to monkeys, along the way.

However, on the climb, the group will stop off at a children's home near the mountain and hand over a number of football shirts collected by pupils at the academy.

Today, school expedition leader Colm McCloskey said: "While in Nepal, the group will be spending a day at a children's home in Kathmandu, where they will present football shirts donated by the Thomas Deacon pupils and be playing a variety of games with the children of the home.

"One of the academy's missions is to broaden pupils' horizons and forge international links, and this is a fantastic opportunity to achieve this.

"Pupils will then depart Kathmandu, taking an internal flight to Lukla on June 29, and, from here, they will begin the ascent to the base camp, completing their expedition section of their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

"Pupils then will descend to the Royal Chitwan National Park, where they will enjoy a few days of elephant back safari and white water rafting before returning to Kathmandu for their flight back to England.

"This is a chance of a lifetime experience, and one to tell the grandchildren about.

"The pupil are thrilled about what lays ahead of them. They have been attending the school gym in preparation for the trek, and know that they have a few challenging days ahead of them.
