6.20pm: Freezing conditions set to continue across Peterborough as snow returned to the city on Thursday afternoon.

Temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing during Thursday night, whilst any snow is expected to ease during the evening, but be aware of icy conditions on the road on Friday morning.

Friday should be dry, with some sunshine, but temperatures will dip to -4°C overnight.

Current forecast indicating temperatures are set to begin rising from Sunday onwards.

Met Office has an Amber Alert at Thursday, 5pm: “Whilst there is uncertainty regarding where the heaviest and most persistent snow will fall, accumulations of 1 to 5 cm are likely with a risk of up to about 10 cm in the worst affected regions.

These larger totals are more likely across the Midlands and perhaps southeast Wales.

Later in the night the snow is expected to die out across northern, eastern and much of central England to be followed by widespread ice on untreated surfaces. The public should be aware that, as a result, there could be some disruption to travel.”

Shock as Winter predicted to be cold. Widespread shock was expressed as Winter got cold. A local spokesman said "There is all this white stuff falling out of the sky, it's a bit like rain but heavier, and you can do some amazing stuff with it. See, if I pick up a big handful, clump it together and then throw it, wow, this is so much fun. Trouble is, it's a bit slippery too - whoops - see, there I go...We're not sure what to call this stuff, someone suggested something like "slippery rain", but I prefer something shorter like "snow". We're looking back through the archives to see if this has ever happened before. Someone said they thought it had at the same time last year, but he also thinks the world is gonna end in 2012, so we aren't listening to him". As similar stories emerged from around the world, the council tried to dispel widespread panic that this was the end of world come early. "We're gonna put council tax up, that always gives 'em something else to think about".

If there are school closures, I just want to issue the annual reminder about the myth that it's because teachers can't get to work. My wife's a teacher, and last year after heavy overnight snow I was out at 6:30 am literally digging her car out of our driveway. She got to work three quarters of an hour later to find other teachers milling around unsure what was happening. Finally the school took a call from one of the governors informing them all that the school was to close for the day, due to 'elf and safety. So, if the schools close, don't blame the teachers, blame either the governors, the local authority or the compo culture.

Not all schools close at the slightest flake of snow thank goodness. It would take 10 foot drifts to close my childrens' school! My daughter's in Year 6 and it's only ever closed once due to bad weather in all that time.

Do hope so, at least they'll be no traffic jams and it's half term next week!
