Peterborough's first 'green' university launched

Peterborough's first ever Environmental University has been launched.

Peterborough's first ever Environmental University has been launched. The Greeniversity has been created by eco-charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), which encourages initiatives that help people and businesses in the city become more environmentally friendly.

PECT members were joined by European Parliament Member for Cambridgeshire Richard Howitt for the launch.

Mr Howitt officially opened the new Greeniversity project, which is part of Peterborough's continuing drive to be Britain's environment capital.

The scheme has received a 70,000 Government grant to offer a series of "green" classes that will be held at venues across the city.

The classes range from knitting and bicycle maintenance to healthy cooking and insulating lofts.

The launch of Greeniversity was held at the Green Backyard in London Road, Woodston, where Mr Howitt cut the green ribbon with Greeniversity tutor Janine Starling.

Mr Howitt said he was impressed: "This is another example of how the city is leading the way on environmental issues.

"Projects like Greeniversity are vital if we are to do all we can to cut our greenhouse gases. It can also save people money, improve their health and foster a sense of community spirit."
