Peter leaves fire station after 48 years of service

A FAMILIAR face at Wisbech fire station is missing after a fire station worker who devoted a career spanning nearly 50 years to the service took retirement.

A FAMILIAR face at Wisbech fire station is missing after a fire station worker who devoted a career spanning nearly 50 years to the service took retirement.Peter Turley joined the then Isle of Ely fire brigade on his 18th birthday, beginning as an auxiliary fireman before becoming a retained firefighter.

After retiring from that position in 1998, Mr Turley stayed on at the station as a handyman and support worker. Now, after a total of 48 years service, the 66- year-old can finally look forward to a life of leisure after deciding to leave for good.

After a special farewell presentation by his workmates, Mr Turley said: "I am sad to leave my colleagues at the station, but I'm looking forward to playing more golf and taking up indoor bowls."
