THE parents of a Deeping man who died from leukaemia aged just 27 say they have been “humbled” by the outpouring of sympathy following his death.

Paul and Lynn Muldoon, of Ascendale, Deeping St James, have spoken of the widespread support they have received after losing their son, Sam, a week before Christmas Day.

Sam, who also had Down’s syndrome, died at Spalding Johnston Community Hospital after a nine-month battle with cancer.

The couple said: “We have received 178 condolence cards, plus letters and emails from far and wide and they are still coming. We are totally amazed and humbled by the breadth of love people must have had for Sam.”

About 250 people attended a thanksgiving service for Sam at Deeping Baptist Church, in Bridge Street, following his cremation in Peterborough, while a collection raised more than £500 for The Lodge Trust.

The charity provides individual Christian support for adults with learning disabilities at its care home in Market Overton, Rutland.

Mr Muldoon is a trustee of the charity and Sam would visit public events at the home. It is a service from which Mr and Mrs Muldoon hoped their son would one day benefit.

Chief executive officer at the Lodge Trust, David Whitmarsh, said the funds would go towards upgrading the charity’s accommodation.

He said: “We are very grateful for this kind and generous donation and thank the family for their thoughtfulness.”

“Sam was full of fun and he was always inquisitive and cheerful. We will miss him.”

Lodge Trust staff were among representatives of a large number of organisations paying respects to Sam at his thanksgiving service.

Among those represented were New College Stamford, where Sam was being educated before his death; the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, in which Sam achieved a gold award in 2009; and the Age Concern Day Centre, for which he volunteered.

Also represented were Peterborough Area Down’s Syndrome Group, the Let’s Get Going group, which supports people with learning disabilities, the Royal Mencap Society, and various churches.

Mr and Mrs Muldoon said a number of people attended the service after learning of Sam’s passing through an article paying tribute to his life published in the Evening Telegraph and on its website in December.

The couple said they hoped it showed people what a fulfilling life those with learning disabilities can lead.
