Orton Longueville residents have been boosted this week - with the installation of a new free-to-use cash machine.welcome boostPeople living in Orton Longueville have been without a cash machine serving their area for years, with the nearest ATM being a driving distance away.

However, for those living near Oakleigh Drive getting money out could now be as easy as taking a light stroll, thanks to the post office.

The new cash machine was officially opened on Wednesday as part of a drive by the Post Office nationally to install more free-to-use ATMs across the country.

Postmaster at the Oakleigh Drive Post Office Mark Plumb said the decision to install the machine at his shop was great news for his customers.

He said: "There are some cash machines in the area but now people have the choice as to whether or not they want to pay to take out their money.

"It has been put in following the 30,000 refurbishment we had at the building last year and the increase in business we have had because of that. It's great news for us, it's great news for the customers and it's great news for the area as well.

"A lot of the elderly customers have said they will still come inside and come to the counter to get their money but people aged 45 or under, who are used to using a cash machine will probably use it most."

Orton with Hampton ward councillor Nigel North was also delighted at the news.

He said: "It's excellent for the community and it shows the area's vibrancy. It means the small things, like someone wanting to get fish and chips from the local shop will be able to go down there and get their money out next door.

"I have always strongly objected to being charged 1.50 to draw out my money because, often, you may only want to get a tenner out and you are then losing 15 per cent of that."

"It will help the people who are less well off because someone like me would say 'I'm not paying that' and would drive five minutes to get the money out for free. But perhaps the elderly or people who can't afford to get around as much, are the ones who end up getting charged."
