YOUNGSTERS at St John's Church School, in Riseholme, Orton Goldhay went bananas as they were taught the finer points of the Fairtrade movement.Pupils at the school were treated to free fruit and given a presentation by Anglia Co-operative about how they can help transform the lives of millions of families across the globe.

This month's Fairtrade Fortnight - which started on Monday and finishes on March 7 - sees the Fairtrade Organisation calling on as many people as possible to get involved in The Big Swap.

It involves asking people to switch their everyday food and drinks for Fairtrade products during the course of the month.

Anglia Co-operative, as a Fairtrade product provider, has this week been working with local schools to spread the message and encourage youngsters to make The Big Swap.

Marketing manager at the society, Jill Basson shared her knowledge and expertise with the pupils when she visited St John's Primary School on Monday.

A slightly different morning assembly compared to what the children are used to was held at the school, with the pupils interacting with videos, pictures and products to further their understanding about Fairtrade and how it benefits families and communities in developing countries.

The Co-operative Foodstore, in Orton Gate Shopping Centre, which is opposite the primary school, also delivered 250 bananas - one for every pupil and staff member - as part of the fun-filled day.

Business and innovation manager at the school, Simon Hollingsworth said: "The children loved the presentation delivered by Anglia Co-operative and this furthered their knowledge about Fairtrade products.

"I am sure that they will all be going home and spreading the message to their parents."

Jill Basson added: "We are only too pleased to support Fairtrade Fortnight and get the local schools involved in making The Big Swap.

"The pupils had a very strong sense of fair and unfair, and really appreciated how Fairtrade ensures that farmers and their communities get a fair deal."
