TWO Peterborough police officers who fought a life and death battle to save a man who was hanging in a tree are to receive top life-saving awards.

TWO Peterborough police officers who fought a life and death battle to save a man who was hanging in a tree are to receive top life-saving awards.Pc Danny Cummings and PCSO Kyle Saunders have each been awarded Royal Humane Society Resuscitation Certificates with the announcement being made in London yesterday.

The horror incident on February 1, 2009, started when police were called to Orton Goldhay after receiving reports from an informant that a man was hanging from a tree.

They arrived and managed to resusicitate him while other officers had to stop his mother from putting a rope around her own neck.

The society's secretary, Dick Wilkinson, said: "When they arrived the man was on the ground and showing no vital signs.

"They commenced CPR and after a short time the man started to breathe.

"He later recovered in hospital, but were it not for the fine first aid skills of these two officers, his suicide attempt would surely have succeeded. This was a particularly commendable effort from the officers in demanding circumstances.

"While they were trying to save the man's life colleagues were trying to deal with the man's mother who was attempting to wrap a rope round her own neck."

They were nominated for the award by Cambridgeshire Police.

No date has yet been fixed for the awards presentation but it is likely to be in the near future.
