Prime Minister David Cameron has offered his support to a blog by a Cambridgeshire woman which aims to put a smile on the faces of troops serving in Afghanistan.
Zoey Peace, 26, started a funny and touching blog to help her cope without her partner, Corporal Sam Garwood, during his six-month deployment to Camp Bastion in Helmand Province.
Over four months it has attracted up to 16,000 visitors each day and seen dozens of celebrities send photos bearing the words “Smile Camp Bastion” to help lift spirits among the troops.
During a visit to Afghanistan on Thursday, Mr Cameron became the latest to lend his support as he posed for a picture by RAF Logistics Officer Tom Cousins.
Miss Peace, from Doddington, March, said: “This is fantastic news - when I launched the blog I never thought the Prime Minister himself would get
Since the launch of the blog, she has tweeted hundreds of pop stars, sports heroes and household names to ask them to send in their contributions.
Now more than 50 stars - including singer Katherine Jenkins, Inbetweeners actor James Buckley and Paralympian Jonnie Peacock- have joined the cause.
She said: “When Sam left, I wasn’t worried about being on my own.
“But I was terrified about how much I would miss him.
“It’s moments like being in a packed restaurant and bursting into snotty tears because a song comes on that reminds you of them.
“It might not work for everyone, but for me this blog has been the right way to cope and show Sam I’m OK.
“The fact so many other people have taken something from it has been a bonus.
“I’m still so overwhelmed at how far it’s come.”
A self-confessed “unconventional military girlfriend”, Miss Peace said the blog was her chance to do something positive while Cpl Garwood was deployed for the second time with the 29 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps (RLC).
The humorous entries focus on things Miss Peace has achieved - or wants to achieve - without him, such as putting up a shelf, learning yoga and cooking a decent three-course meal.
