Video: Vehicles torched in ‘mindless’ arson attack

Sunday, 6.43pm: Residents caught up in a devastating arson attack in a Peterborough street in the early hours of this morning (23 September) have slammed the culprits as “mindless”.

Four vehicles - two cars and two vans - as well as a fence were lost in the deliberate blaze in Illston Place, Welland.

Firefighters from Dogsthorpe were called to the outbreak shortly after 5am.

Crew members used two hose reels and two sets of breathing apparatus to bring the blaze under control.

Anthony (31) and Leah Robb (34), of Illston Place, lived next door to the vehicles which were damaged in the fire and had their fence destroyed in the attack.

Leah said she became aware of the fire when she awoke to the sound of neighbours talking.

She said: “I then heard crackling and I thought ‘oh my god, there’s something on fire’. I though it was our house.”

Anthony rushed outside and moved his car and the house’s bins to prevent them being caught up in the blaze.

He said: “The flames were right up. They were higher than the house.”

Both described the culprits as “mindless” for the attack, which has left the family shaken.

Leah, who with Anthony has four young children, said: “It’s more than likely at least two of my children will wake up panicked about it.”

Anyone with information should contact the police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or by visiting the Crimestoppers website.
