Video & photos: Flash mob spells out marriage proposal

A flash mob in Peterborough’s Queensgate shopping centre this afternoon (Friday) helped one man “shop the question”, shocking his fiancee and delighting passers-by.

Phil Keene got down on one knee as 30 dancers, including his eight-year-old daughter Lillie, spelt out “Charlotte, will you marry me?” inside Queensgate shopping centre in Peterborough.

The gathered crowd cheered and whooped at the surprise sight as Charlotte Ashworth said “yes”.

And to add to the occasion, dozens of Charlotte’s family travelled 200 miles from Manchester, including proud dad Andy and 89-year-old grandma Joan.

But the whole thing almost failed before it had even begun when the music for the dancers didn’t work.

Speaking afterwards, Phil said: “I was shaking, especially when the music went wrong.

“And I almost gave the game away and said it was an engagement surprise when I meant an anniversary surprise.”

The 30 dancers were from Stanground Academy and have been practicing since July.

Teacher Beckie Barnes, who is a friend of Phil’s, said: “I thought it was a very romantic gesture which I was really proud to be a part of, as were the students.”
