Wednesday, 12:50pm: The fountains in Cathedral Square are back on, but only until 2pm while Peterborough City Council tests new filters.
A bank of filters, one of several in the feature, was replaced overnight in the hope of making the fountains less likely to become blocked in the future.
The council switched the fountains off in July after a regular maintenance check revealed a filtration pump was faulty.
Following the test, the used water will be examined to assess the effectiveness of the new bank of filters.
A council spokesman said it is hoped the fountains will return before the close of the season on October 25.
