A mother and her partner from Peterborough will stand trial over the death of tragic youngster Tyler Whelan on Thursday (19 April).

The trial of Stephanie Whelan (27), of Sheepwalk, Paston, and Elvis Lee (33), of Crabtree, Paston, is expected to start on Thursday morning at Cambridge Crown Court.

Reporter Stephen Briggs will be reporting live from court on Twitter - @ETstephenB.

Lee is accused of murdering five-year-old Tyler. He is also charged with causing or allowing the death of a child and three counts of cruelty.

Whelan is charged with causing or allowing the death of a child and three counts of cruelty.

Both Whelan and Lee deny all the charges against them.

A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said the trial would be heard by High Court Judge Mr Justice Nichol and expected the trial to last at least seven days.

Tyler died after becoming unconscious at his home in Crabtree, Paston on the morning of Monday, March 7, last year.

He was taken to Peterborough City Hospital, but died later when his condition deteriorated.

Whelan and Lee were arrested by police on Friday, March 11.

Following the death, The Evening Telegraph was flooded with messages from friends, neighbours and other residents paying tribute to Tyler and floral tributes were placed outside the youngster’s home.

His classmates at Paston Ridings Primary School were offered counselling and children picked out a star in his honour, which many sang to at night.

A spot at the school was selected for children to leave their own tributes to the five-year-old.

His funeral took place in Wigan on April 11, with mourners, many of whom were wearing pink as a tribute, filling the church.
