New city foodbank officially opened

MP Stewart Jackson officially opened the Peterborough Foodbank today (Friday, March 1).

The Peterborough Foodbank has so far helped more than 550 people, 40 per cent of whom were children, since it started operating in October last year.

The scheme is run in partnership with local churches, led by Kingsgate Community Church, and is supported by the Christian charity, The Trussell Trust.

Mr Jackson officially launched the project at Westgate Methodist Church, in Westgate.

He said: “This is a great local initiative which I am very pleased to support.

“It shows that the Christian community working with others across our city are directing help to those most in need and supporting the statutory agencies to make a difference and a positive contribution, particularly for families with children.”

People who use the foodbank have to obtain a voucher, which they then present at one of the centres in exchange for food.

The vouchers are given out by a number of local agencies which include housing associations, Peterborough Citizens’ Advice Service and Peterborough City Council social care services.

All the food is donated by members of the public, local churches and other Peterborough groups, with more than 11 tonnes having been sent to the foodbank so far.

Anyonone who would like to find out about how to receive food, volunteer your time or donate food, should visit www.peterborough.foodbank.org.uk, phone 01733 311156 or email info@peterborough.foodbank.org.uk.
