Mugly competing for ugliest dog title

A celebrity pooch from Peterborough is to represent the nation as Britain’s first entry in the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest.

Mugly, an eight-year-old Chinese crested dog, is jetting off to California today with owner Bev Nicholson (49), of Eastgate, in the hope of becoming top dog in the annual competition.

If he succeeds, he will go one better than the title he secured in 2005 - Britain’s Ugliest Dog.

Ms Nicholson, said: “I think that he is the most beautiful dog from the inside out and want the world to know that too, so he will be flying the flag for all British doggies that are challenged in the beauty department.”

She is also calling for PT readers to back Mugly by voting for him in an online poll, the results of which will be taken into account by the judges, with Mugly currently second to a 10-year-old Mexican hairless mix called Creature.

Mugly, who will have his progress followed by Channel 5, will ultimately need to impress in terms of temperament, attitude, health and crowd-pleasing.

If successful, however, he can expect to be coming home with the first prize of $1,000.
