He helped light up London 2012 with medal-winning performances, but now Olympic star Louis Smith is to light up a Peterborough shopping centre ahead for Christmas.

The Eye gymnast, who won a silver and bronze medal at the games this summer, will switch on the Christmas Lights at Serpentine Green in November.

The Hampton shopping centre asked shoppers via their Facebook page who they would like to switch on this year’s lights and Louis’ name came out on top.

The centre Chantelle Watson, centre manager, said: “I can’t tell you how excited we are that Louis has agreed to switch our Christmas lights on. I think everyone in Hampton and Peterborough is so proud of Louis achievements.

The switch-on will take place on Thursday, November 22, at 5.30pm.

Louis returns to the public view far sooner, however, appearing on Channel 4’s Million Pound Drop tonight (Friday, September 28), from 9pm, to raise money for SportsAid and then the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday, October 4.
