Monday, 11am: An investigation is underway to establish the cause of an explosion at a fireworks factory in Peterborough yesterday (Sunday, August 19).

Crews from Stanground, Dogsthorpe and the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Station were called to La Maitre, in Fourth Drove, Fengate, at about 4.15pm.

An explosion had taken place in a fireworks container measuring about three metres by 10 metres, which was completely destroyed.

Firefighters used a hose reel to extinguish the fire and made the scene safe before returning to their stations by 6.10pm.

A witness, who asked not to be named, reported hearing a small explosion, before seeing a plume of white and then black smoke, though residents in Stanground also heard the blast.

A spokesman for Le Maitre said no one was on site at the time of the explosion and no one was injured.
