Councillors have rejected an application to set up an off licence in the Eastgate area of Peterborough.
An application for a grocery store and off licence was put before councillors at Peterborough Town Hall today (Monday).
However, a large number of people from the Star Road area objected to the bid, with more than 400 people signing petitions against the move.
Several people attended the hearing and voiced concerns that an off licence would lead to an increase in crime and anti social behaviour in the area, with others pointing out that there were already a number of shops locally.
The licensing panel spend over an hour and half debating the proposal before returning to announce that the application had been rejected outright.
The applicant, Harkan Tas, has 21 days to appeal the decision.
