Mum on track for racing joy
THE prospect of roaring around a motor racing circuit at speeds of 150mph sets Jenny Taylor's pulse soaring.
THE prospect of roaring around a motor racing circuit at speeds of 150mph sets Jenny Taylor's pulse soaring. Now the Peterborough mum has moved a step a closer to fulfiling her dream of making a name for herself in the world of motorsport.
Mrs Taylor (32) has been offered the chance to be the only woman to drive in next season’s 16-race Stock Car Speed Association (SCSA) racing series at some of England’s premier racetracks.
And the opportunity would be particularly poignant for Mrs Taylor because she would be driving a breast cancer V8 vehicle sponsored by Cancer Research UK.
Mrs Taylor, of Whittington, Parnwell, lost her grandmother, Phyllis McShane, to cancer.
She said: “She had a lump in her breast, but because she was old school, she was too proud to get it checked out.
“She ignored it and the lump turned into cancer. Although she lived for a few years after being diagnosed, the cancer was terminal and she became a shadow of her former self.
“It is that kind of story that must encourage people to go to the doctor as soon as they find any sort of lump. Who knows what would have happened to my grandmother if she had gone to the doctor immediately.”
The only thing standing in Mrs Taylor’s way is the 20,000 she needs to raise in sponsorship to secure a place on the Revolution Racing team.
She is hoping to attract a 1,000 sum from 20 Peterborough and Cambridgeshire businesses.
A range of benefits are available for potential sponsors, including VIP hospitality, company names and logos across her car and an opportunity to be part of the pit crew.
And she has hopes her public profile will be boosted if channel five follow through its interest in making a documentary following the progress of her season.
Mrs Taylor has raced go-karts since a young age and was a finalist in a search this year to find 16 women to race in the Formula Woman Novice Championship.
She has a daughter, Abigail (7), and works as a delivery driver for Central Auto Supplies in Peterborough.
Revolution Racing team principal Duane Kidd said: “With Jenny, we at Revolution are aiming to win the converted 2008 rookie of the year title.
“It would be the first time a woman has won it, in the year the Motor Sport Association is promoting women in motorsport.”
