As her home in Blackmead, Orton Malborne, filled with lung-clogging smoke, the only means of escape was blocked by a wall of flames.

But Miss Kinlan (22) not only had herself to worry about. Also woken from their sleep were her son, Ryan (4), sister Amy (14), cousin Selina (17), and pal, Claire (14).

She said: It was terrifying, there was smoke everywhere, and I knew I had to get everyone out. At first I could not wake the girls in the living room. There was smoke everywhere, and one of the girls opened the door and the flames were really high.

We still can t get over it, it was the most frightening thing that I have experienced. I thought we would die.

As neighbours tried to put out the flames, the family was forced to stand on a bedroom balcony until fire crews arrived to rescue them on November 28 last year.

Johnson, of Stanground, was yesterday jailed for four years for arson, assaulting Miss Kinlan andharassing her. He admitted all charges.

The couple s relationship had fallen apart in October, soon after he cut her lip and blacked her right eye in a row.

And prosecutor Nicola Moore said that Johnson told Miss Kinlan that if they ever broke up he would burn the house down.

Today Miss Kinlan added: I hate him. He could have killed us. I wish his sentence was longer. I don t know what is going to happen when he gets out, I won t be able to stay in Peterborough.
