The Poppy Appeal was launched in the city on Monday and will run until November 10 with collectors out in force.
Around 1,000 tins go out to locations across Peterborough and the appeal aims to set a new fund-raising record.
About 20 genuine collectors are out and about at any one time and they all wear two badges, one from Peterborough City Council and one from the legion to prove who they are.
The Royal British Legion supports serving and ex-forces personnel and their families.
It spends £1.4 million a week providing support to those in need of help, ranging from injured soldiers to bereaved widows and widowers.
