Messages of support and congratulations have poured in for Eye gymnast Louis Smith who won silver in the men’s individual gymnastics today.

After the event Louis Smith tweeted: “Wow crazy! What a mad day! Loved the support although it was mad scary!

“Love all my fans and friends.”

Eye and Thorney ward councillor David Sanders said that he would be writing to his fellow councillors to recommend that Louis is awarded the Freedom of Peterborough.

Cllr Sanders said: “Louis has done the country proud, he has done Peterborough proud and he has done Eye proud.

“He is a shining example to young people in Peterborough and shows what hard work and determination can achieve.

“I hope Louis is feeling proud of himself right now.”

Former council leader John Peach said: “Well done Louis Smith, a home grown hero from Eye, Peterborough. A civic reception next I hope.”

Lindsay McGinlay, chairman of Gymtasticz, the former City of Peterborough Gymnastics, Club, said: “I feel for Louis right now.

“I’m gutted he didn’t win gold because he has worked so hard for this moment.

“To actually get the same score as his rival but miss out by the narrowest margin is just cruel - but in my eyes he won gold.

“His performance was outstanding, he couldn’t have tried any harder or give anything more.

“He has already helped his team to win bronze so should feel proud of what he has achieved.

“I think Louis is too young to retire and I know he still has the hunger so hopefully he will go for gold in Rio in 2016.”

More to follow.
