Sacrewell Farm and Country Centre will be closed this Friday (October 19) to mark the funeral of its former manager.

David Powell MBE died at his home at the age of 95 on October 3.

The nephew-in-law of William Scott Abbott, in whose memory the William Scott Abbott Trust - which owns Sacrewell Farm - was founded, Mr Powell managed the farm until he retired in 1982.

After the trust was formed in 1964, it was Mr Powell who opened the Sacrewell Watermill to the public and started the first school tours of the farm.

Such was his success on the farm, he earned himself the nickname “Mr Sacrewell”.

Michael Armitage, who took over as manager in 1982, said: “The most outstanding thing about David was that he was so positive. Most farmers are very negative but he never was. He was a remarkable man.”

Mr Powell was also a former Royal Marine officer, and was an active member in the communities in and around Thornhaugh, Wansford and beyond.
