Garden waste collection to be suspended in some parts of Peterborough

Bin collections may be affected by the wintry and icy weather, residents are being warned.

Bin collections may be affected by the wintry and icy weather, residents are being warned.

Monday, 2pm: Garden waste collection is to be suspended in Peterborough tomorrow (Tuesday, January 22) due to the weather conditions.

Enterprise Peterborough, which collects waste on behalf of Peterborough City Council, will instead split its crews between black (household waste) and green (recycling) bin freighters to assist the crews empty the bins.

A spokeswoman said: “Where the freighters are unable to access side roads due to safety concerns, they will return to empty those bins as soon as it is safe for them to do so.”

Tuesday collections areas are: Bretton North, Bretton South, Werrington, Wittering and villages.

It follows advice issued to householders on Friday on what to do if their bin is not collected due to bad weather.

If the black (household waste) bin is not collected, householders are asked to leave it out as it will be collected as soon as possible.

The food waste box can also be left out with the black bin.

If the brown (garden) and green (recycling) bins are not collected, householders are asked to take them back in and put them out again a fortnight later. In these instances, the food waste box should be taken back in and presented with the black bin on the next week’s collections.

Any excess recycling will be collected if it is presented in clear plastic bags next to the green bin.

Recycling in black sacks will be rejected, residents are warned.

In the event of an extended period of severe weather, a spokeswoman for Enterprise Peterborough said: “If your black bin cannot be collected for an extended period, a reasonable amount of excess residual waste will be accepted if presented in black bin bags alongside your wheelie bin.”

Anyone in doubt is encouraged to visit the Peterborough City Council website or contact Customer Services on 01733 747474.
