Gallery: Peterborough blanketed in snow

Heavy snow in the city centre in the cold weather conditions

Heavy snow in the city centre in the cold weather conditions

Monday, 10.45am: Many schools are closed today whilst police are warning drivers to take care after Sunday’s snowfall blanketed the city with temperatures set to plummit overnight.

Most schools across Peterborough are closed today due to the conditions.

Latest forecast for Peterborough is for a grey day on Monday, but no more snow (although a few showers are possible regionally).

Temperature are expected to drop to -4°C overnight, colder in rural areas, so a yellow ice warning is in place for Monday and Tuesday, icy stretches are likely on untreated surfaces especially.

Police in Peterborough advised motorists to take extra care following snow across the county and with more expected during the week.

Anyone travelling on the county’s roads has been urged to drive to the conditions.

Police Sergeant Gordon Murray said: “With the current weather conditions it is important people allow plenty of time for their journey and drive to the conditions of the road.”

Motorists are advised to:

- Ensure windows are fully de-iced and clear before setting off.

- Make sure lights and number plates are free from snow and ice and clearly visible.

- Check tyres are in a good condition before setting off.

- Carry a blanket and shovel in your car.

- If the weather is severe consider whether you need to make the journey?

- If it is essential make sure you allow plenty of time.

For many the cold snap and renewed snowfall has brought the chance to enjoy some wintry pastimes from building snowmen to sledging and snowball fights.
