£500,000 contract to improve Boongate access to be considered

Peterborough City Council’s councillor responsible for planning will consider a bid to widen a road near a roundabout by this Friday.

The cabinet member for housing, neighbourhoods and planning will decide whether or not to approve a contract for the widended road at the junction between Boongate and the Frank Perkins Parkway.

The estimated cost to the council is £500,000 and if agreed by Cllr Peter Hiller, the contractor will be the Midlands Highways Alliance (MHA).

A report by Paul Phillipson, Executive Director of Operations at Peterborough City Council, said: “The Junction 5 Improvement Scheme (Boongate West Widening) is designed to alleviate peak time congestion on the north bound exit sliproad of the (A1139) Frank Perkins Parkway, resulting in reduced journey times and fewer road traffic accidents.

“The scheme proposes to widen the existing two lane exit sliproad to provide three lanes.

“In addition, Boongate in the westerly direction will be widened over part of its length to provide an additional lane heading into the city centre. As part of the proposals the advance directional signing at Junction 5 will be updated to meet current Department for Transport standards.”

The MHA already has a number of important contracts with Peterborough City Council, including a £1 million lighting efficiency scheme, £400,000 for the Eye Green Traffic Mitigation, £500,000 for the Cowgate Enhancement Scheme and £2 million for street lighting.
