King's School primary plan approved
PLANS to create a new junior section at a top performing city school have been given the go-ahead.
PLANS to create a new junior section at a top performing city school have been given the go-ahead.From September 2011, the King's School, in Park Road, Peterborough, will be accepting 60 new pupils aged between seven and 11 as part of their new Key Stage 2 (KS2) section.
The announcement was made at a specially convened meeting at Peterborough Town Hall last week after the plans were "called in" by councillors and challenged.
Although the proposals were initially approved by Peterborough City Council, it was called in for debate by councillors Lee Gilbert and Mahmood Fazal on behalf of ward councillor Matthew Dalton, who raised concerns about class sizes and whether it would be in the best interests of the pupils.
But all five councillors at the meeting approved the plans.

Headteacher at King's School Gary Longman said: "We are absolutely delighted by the decision. In many ways we will be putting the clocks back a number of years to when we used to teach seven to 18-year-olds with all the choristers being in one school.
"Both the cathedral and ourselves are pleased with the final decision.
"We will now inform the governors, who will start the ball rolling and devise and plan to ensure everything is in place for the children when they start in September 2011."
The old boarding school building will now be given a 60,000 makeover to transform it into classrooms.
Currently, the school, which has 974 pupils, only teaches 11 to 18-year-olds. This means pupils aged under 11 on cathedral choir scholarships are educated at Peterborough High School (PHS) before moving on to King's School for their secondary education.
The move to create the section was prompted by the fact that PHS is a fee-paying school and, while boys could attend as choristers and get funding from Peterborough Cathedral, the same does not apply to girls.
Therefore, governors at King's School believed that creating the new KS2 section and educating all pupils aged seven to 18 in the same school would solve the funding problem.
The new primary school will cater for nine choristers and six non-choristers in each of the four year groups.
