Hoax 999 call teen spared jail
News from The Peterborough Evening Telegraph, www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk
A TEENAGER who made hundreds of hoax 999 calls on Christmas Day and Boxing Day has been spared an immediate jail term.
Kerry Ann Moate (18) made 756 nuisance 999 calls on December 25 and 26 and 44 hoax calls to the Cambridgeshire control room between December 11 and 13.
She pleaded guilty to two counts of persistently making use of the public communication network to cause annoyance, inconvenience or anxiety and was given a four-month sentence suspended for two years by Huntingdon Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Moate, of Little Paxton, Huntingdon, was also subjected to supervision and mental health orders and ordered to pay £85 costs.
Penny Cannon, prosecuting, read out a statement from Pc Nicholas Percival, who was on duty in the control room when some of the calls were made.
He said they had no option but to take the calls seriously because they were silent and at one point a unit was deployed.
Kevin Warboys, defending, said: “She was in a very low mood and Christmas is always a difficult time for her for historic reasons. She also had long-term frustrations with the police.”
Chairman of the bench, Heather White said: “Fortunately nothing untoward happened as a result of these calls, but there was a serious risk.”
