High-speed pursuit driver avoids jail spell

Adrian Trowell from Orton Goldhay, Peterborough, who led police on a high-speed car chase through Peterborough has been spared a jail term to look after his ill wife.Trowell (37), of Medworth, Orton Goldhay, was clocked travelling at nearly 100mph during the chase, which took him along the busy parkway system in the city and past roadworks.

On Tuesday, Trowell appeared at Peterborough Crown Court where he was given a 32 week prison sentence, suspended for two years.

He was also disqualified from driving for two years after pleading guilty to aggravated vehicle taking and driving with no insurance during the incident, which happened at around 4.35pm on November 14 last year.

Craig McDougall, prosecuting, told the court Trowell had been driving his wife's Ford Fiesta when it was spotted by officers on patrol in Bretton.

After a check on the car, it was discovered that the vehicle was being driven without insurance.

Despite the officers starting the siren and turning on their vehicle's emergency lights, Trowell failed to stop.

Mr McDougall said: "Trowell did pull over at the side of the road, but when Pc James Styles pulled over, he drove off at speed.

"He drove onto Bretton Way and onto Bretton Gate, where several motorists had to take evasive action.

"He then drove onto the A47, where he failed to notice a Ford Focus, and nearly hit the back of it.

"Trowell drove at high speed, swerving in and out of traffic and flashing his lights. He exited the road at the last minute, swerving across a motorist in the inside lane."

He moved onto the A15, driving past roadworks while there were workers in the road.

He reached the Eye Roundabout, before driving onto Belvoir Way in Welland, where he pulled up next to a female and tried to hand the car keys over, but he was arrested.

During the chase, he travelled at 94mph in a 70mph zone and 78mph in a 40mph zone.

The court also heard Trowell tested positive for opiates after he was arrested and already had six points on his licence.

Defending, Sarah Przybylska said: "He panicked when he saw the police. He has a bad record, but has not offended since 2001.

"He is the full time carer of his wife who suffers from arthritis and bad back problems."

Judge Sean Enright said: "Your driving was shocking to put it mildly.

"Other road users' safety was put at risk."
