Happy memories of Empire Day in Farcet

Elise Parker (nee Smith) wrote in following our recent photographs of Empire Day celebrations.

Elise Parker (nee Smith) wrote in following our recent photographs of Empire Day celebrations. She can recognise some of the girls in first the group shot.

In the top row, from the left, third along is Freda Box and fifth along is Mary Gumby.

In the bottom row, Elsie herself can be seen fifth from the left, sixth along is Joan Bellamy.

Elsie was able to tell us the shot was taken in 1931.

She also recognised some of the faces in picture to right, of Mrs Stockel's class from Farcet School in 1932-34.

This had been sent in by Joan Maxfield, who has since moved out of the area.

Joan already new the names of the girls in the front row, which are, from left - Linda Scott, Joan Bellamy (later Maxfield), Hilda Smith and Dorothy Adams.

But we were struggling for names of the front row.

Elsie was able to supply, from left, Gertie Tinkler and Sylvia Leeder. She is not sure of the next girl along and then we knew that the girl on the far right is Rose Downs.

Elsie has also supplied another photograph, of the girls with the sashes.

This was taken in 1954. In the top row, from left are Gertie Tinkler, Phyllis Sanderson, Elsie, Zelpha Hobbs, Mary Gumby, Dorothy Adams and Muriel Dawks.

In the bottom row, from left are Marion Preston, Hillary Dunkley, Joan Leeder, Unise Bowd, two unknown girls and the Elaine Duncombe.
