Gun alert sparked by rabbit shoot
A FARMER shooting rabbits on his land sparked a police response to the sleepy village of Yarwell yesterday.
A resident called police after growing concerned about persistent shots they heard being fired in a field off Mill Road just after 11am.
A police helicopter was scrambled to the scene to provide assistance, while uniformed officers investigated the shots.
It was discovered that the farmer had been shooting rabbits in his field and that he had a licence for the gun, so officers saw no need to call in a firearms team to deal with the situation.
A Northamptonshire police spokesman said that the farmer was not committing an offence, as the weapon was licensed and he was shooting on his own land.
But officers did advise the farmer to take into consideration the concerns of other local residents in future when he is shooting.
The spokesman added that the shooting did not take place near any public areas and that nobody was at risk.
The helicopter attended the scene as a precaution to provide better views of the rural area, but returned to its base shortly afterwards.
