Green honour is given to city for work to clean up its act

WORK to create a greener Peterborough has secured the city a prestigious honour.

Peterborough City Council has won an international Best Green Government silver award for its approach to creating a clean, green, healthy city.

The council also won a silver award at the International Green Awards in London in the Best Green Audio/Visual category for the film Gillian’s Footprint Counts – what about yours?

The category recognises projects which have inspired change audio-visually.

The awards, which are part of the Royal Society of Arts Environment Award Accreditation scheme, are held annually and aim to showcase the best approaches to being green.

Cllr Samantha Dalton, Cabinet Member for Environment Capital, said: “I am delighted that we have won these two awards, not least because we were up against some large organisations.

“Well done to everyone in our Climate Change Team who works extremely hard to reduce the council’s carbon footprint and encourage other organisations to do the same. These awards are proof that we are leading the way locally and internationally and setting an excellent example.”

The film Gillian’s Footprint Counts – what about yours? was created by the council’s Climate Change Team and Ormiston Bushfield Academy.

It has been shown to city council staff to illustrate the impact that everyday lifestyle choices have upon the environment.

The film stars the council’s chief executive, Gillian Beasley, in the lead role and Cabinet Member for Environment Capital, Cllr Samantha Dalton.

In the entry for the Best Green Government award, the team cited projects which have helped to reduce the council’s energy use and ways in which it is encouraging other organisations to think about their carbon footprints.

The category also asked how the council aims to further improve its green agenda. The team cited the council’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 35 per cent of 2008/09 levels by 2014.
