Girl (16) dies after crash car rolls over

A TEENAGE girl was killed after the car she was travelling in careered out of control on a major road and flipped over on to its roof.

The 16-year-old victim, who has not been named, was thrown into the road from the red Honda Accord during the accident at 11.40am yesterday.

The tragedy occurred as the vehicle, which contained five people, headed towards Peterborough on the A15 when the smash happened close to the Maxey roundabout, just south of Market Deeping.

Medics arrived to find the girl had been thrown from the mangled wreckage of the car, which had landed on its roof on the side of the road. Two other passengers were trapped and had to be cut free.

Police closed the road and put diversions in place as firefighters released the casualties in the car who were then treated by paramedics.

An ambulance spokeswoman said that paramedics had battled to save the girl but she died at the scene.

She said: “We arrived to find the car had rolled over and two people were trapped.

“We gave CPR to a 16-year-old girl at the scene and treated three other people for minor injuries before taking them to Peterborough District Hospital by land ambulance.

“The air ambulance had also been dispatched to the scene of the crash but it was not needed.”

The road was closed for more than four hours to allow accident experts from Cambridgeshire Police to investigate the scene to try to find the cause. The road re-opened around 4pm.

Police have revealed that they believe there was only one vehicle involved in the incident.

They are appealing for any witnesses who saw the crash or saw the car in the minutes before the smash to come forward and help them with their enquiries.

A spokeswoman for the police said: “I am sorry to say one person, a girl, has suffered fatal injuries.

“Three other passengers have been taken to Peterborough District Hospital with minor injuries.”

Sergeant Steve Watson said: “I would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident or saw the vehicle in the moments leading up to the collision. They can contact me on 0345 456 4564.”

* A 23-year-old man from Peterborough has been arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and is currently in custody at Thorpe Wood Police Station.

Speeding may not have been the cause of this tragedy so speed cameras may not have prevented this girls untimely death. Before we jump to conclusions as to the cause lets spare a thought for this girls family and what they must be going though. The others in the car know exactly what happend lets hope the truth comes out.

Chiefy, putting speed cameras at the location would be a knee-jerk reaction, and solve little. People would still tragically be kiled by speeding motorists, just at other places on the same road, and on other roads. To stop it, you would need a speed camera every hundred yards (not meters) or every road everywhere.

How awful for the family, opening the front door and finding two coppers on the doorstep. So many regrets about what they could|should have done when the daughter was anxious to be out with older friends perhaps they didn't really approve of. Now doubt that lad will get nothing more than a slap on the wrist, while they have a lifetime of heartache.

What a tragedy. from the pictures I have seen, surely the car was speding. It also appears that the young girl who died could not have been wearing a seat belt. There have been may road accidents on the A15 in and near to the location of this one. There is nothing wrong with the road layout, I use it regularly. Speed cameras need to be installed on that stretch of the road, they might just save any more deaths. My sincere condolences to the family and friends of the young girl. May she rest in Peace. God bress her.
