Posh held on for victory in an astonishing nine-goal thriller in front of the Sky Tv cameras.Craig Mackail-Smith's hat-trick should have led to an easy Posh win, but some awful defending always kept Rovers interested.

Posh led by two goals on four separate occasions, but each time the visiors fought back.

The win was marred however by a serious injury to striker Aaron Mclean who appeared to dislocate an elbow when landing awkwardly five minutes before the break.

Mclean had scored on 23 minutes to add to a 17th minute goal from Mackail-Smith before Steve Elliott pulled a goal back.

A penalty and a brilliant individual goal sealed Mackail-Smith's hat-trick after the break, but Rovers responded through a Shane Blackett own goal and a Jeff Hughes tap-in.

Substitute Scott Rendell's close range header seven minutes from time appeared to secure the points, but Rickie Lambert's free-kick ensured a nervy final five minutes.

Under-fire goalkeeper Joe Lewis made three one-on-one saves at crucial moments.
