TWO George Boyd goals and a Craig Mackail-Smith strike made sure Posh left the Championship relegation zone behind.Boyd beat Iron keeper Joe Murphy with a high-class half-volley on the turn from just inside the area after 25 minutes.

Mackail-Smith doubled the lead in stoppage time at the end of the half when slotting past Murphy in a one-on-one situation after defender Jordan Spence had made a hash of dealing with a Lee Frecklington pass.

Jonathan Forte hit the bar with an overhead kick as Scunthorpe rallied after the break but top scorer Boyd sealed Posh's second league win of the season from the penalty spot 11 minutes from time.

He made no mistake after recalled Charlie Lee had been tripped by Michael O'Connor.

Posh collected their first clean sheet of the season and climb above Reading into 21st place in the Championship standings.

The Royals don't play until Monday when they face Leicester.
