THE diamond anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne was marked by a special choral evensong service at Peterborough Cathedral.
The Dean of Peterborough the Very Reverend Charles Taylor led the service yesterday evening to commemorate that it was 60 years to the day since the Queen succeeded to the throne, following the death of her father King George VI on February 6, 1952 at Sandringham.
The service featured Peterborough Cathedral Choir performing pieces including We Wait For Thy Loving Kindness by William McKie, Collegium Regale by Charles Wood and Ave Regina caelorum by Cecilia McDowall as well as Psalms 101 and 121.
The congregation that attended the service at the cathedral also heard readings from the Bible, said prayers for the Commonwealth as well as sang the National Anthem to celebrate the occasion.
While the cathedral marked the Queen’s accession yesterday the Bishop of Peterborough, the Right Reverend Donald Allister issued a call to churches across the Peterborough Diocese to take a full part in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in June.
He asked for as many churches as possible to organise street parties as part of the Big Jubilee Lunch being held across the nation on June 3 and to sign a letter from the Bishop to the Queen saying “thank you” for her leadership.
In a letter to the clergy in the diocese, he said: “Local churches are ideally placed to take a lead and facilitate these street parties and so serve their communities and build relationships.”
A special Jubilee prayer and order of service for Sunday, June 3 has also been issued by the Church of England to its parishes.
