A BAR manager has hit out a dark and “dangerous” alleyway near to his venue in Peterborough city centre.

Kevin Jeffery, bar manager at The Solstice, in Northminster, Peterborough, claims the alley running from Broadway to Cattle Market Road, between Tesco and O’Neills, is a hotspot for anti-social behaviour because there is no lighting to illuminate the path.

He claims the alley light has not worked for the past 18 months and despite the issue being raised with police and Peterborough City Council nothing has been done to fix it.

Mr Jeffery said: “There is constant trouble down the alley.

“Every week you see people vomiting and urinating down there. There are often broken bottles, people are generally rowdy and noisy when they are in the alley.

“It is smelly, disgusting and dangerous and something needs to be done.

“The lights have not been working down there for at least a year-and-a-half and at night, especially at this time of year, it is pitch black.

“I can’t remember the last time they were turned on. All the time we have people who come in to the bar and talk about what is going on in the alleyway.

“We have raised it in a number of meetings a number of times and spoken to police and city councillors but nothing has ever been done about it.

“If it is as simple as fitting new light bulbs that would stop the problems, I am sure it would not be very expensive to sort out.”

A Cambridgeshire police spokesman said they were working to crack down on the anti-social behaviour problems in the area.

He said: “We are aware of the issues about the lighting in the alleyway between Broadway and Cattle Market Way.

“We are working with partner agencies to try to sort the problem out as soon as possible.

“Officers have been carrying out extra patrols through the alley at weekends and evenings and these will continue.

“Since the beginning of the year we have charged six people with low-level public order offences in the city centre and five £80 fines have been issued for public order offences including urinating in public.

“We will not tolerate anti-social behaviour and anyone caught acting in such a manner will face prosecution.”

No-one from Peterborough City Council was available to comment.

@8 Brian Gascoyne....No, it would need a full blown firm of consultants to sort this lot out.

Talking of toilets! Why can't this be put to those wonderful Neighbourhood Councils (sorry Committees - sorry Area Committees). This subject is right up their alley or rather the subject matter is!

I HAVE THE SOLUTION, move a couple of caravans down the alley and then the council will install a portable toilet like the one they put in at werrington skate park, SORTED,

Think of the massive carbon footprint a light would make, isn't it worth keeping it out and help to save the planet.

@AliV (#3) Remember that there are no public toilets open in the evenings and a visit to toilets in a venue often means spending more than a penny tipping the "freshen up" staff. So it is no surprise that revellers (both male and female) will seek out any quiet spot to relieve themselves.

"No-one from Peterborough City Council was available to comment" I'm not surprised, as that would require thought and action and god forbid (prayers at meetings excluded) those in charge actually make a decision that is effective!

Let's not forget about the *very* bad smell that comes from that alley - it is basically a public toilet.

Your joking mate you wont get any change from the PCC or the Cambridgeshire Police. Wait till someone is mugged and then you can have four police cars loads of police officers tape all over the place and a notice 'did yousee anything' Thats the way it works!
